RPS BAND PROGRAM
Roseville Public School offers a comprehensive band program for students in years 3 to 6. The band program caters for complete beginners to gifted performers and aims to expand and enrich your child’s musical experiences.
We currently offer three concert bands and three extension ensembles:
- Junior band (Year 3 only)
- Intermediate band (Year 4 only)
- Concert band (Year 5/6 only)
- Stage band (Extension ensemble open to Concert band members)
- Drum corps (Extension ensemble open to all band students, not just drummers)
- Wind ensemble (Extension ensemble open to Concert band members)
We also hope to have a brass ensemble up and running soon. Watch this space!
Our band conductors and tutors are all highly trained and accomplished musicians with performance and music education experience. Your child will learn how to play an instrument, read music, develop as a musician and work as a team in a fun and supportive environment.
BAND ACHIEVEMENTS
Our bands perform at eisteddfods throughout the year and consistently achieve excellent results. Well done and thank you to our conductors, students and parents for their ongoing commitment and support.

HOW TO JOIN THE BAND (OR ENSEMBLE)
- At the end of year 2, students are formally invited to try instruments and join the Junior band in the following year.
- Students in years 3 to 6 are welcome to join the band at any time. For more information, please contact our Band Program Convenor, Belinda Shearer.
- Students enrolled in one of the concert bands are welcome to join an extension ensemble at any time. For more information, please contact our Band Program Convenor, Belinda Shearer.
BAND COMMITMENT
Learning an instrument, like learning a language or any other craft, requires discipline and perseverance. For the most rewarding band program experience, we request that all band members:
- attend weekly band rehearsals
- attend weekly private tutor lessons
- practise band music/pieces at home
- attend band performances/eisteddfods
- attend weekend band camp and/or workshops/intensives
We understand that the first years of taking up an instrument can be a struggle, but we encourage you to stick with it – you won’t regret it!
BAND FEES AND INSTRUMENT HIRE
Instruments can be hired through the school or students may wish to source their own. Band fees are invoiced twice a year. At RPS, we value the learning experiences of all our students. If you’re concerned about band expenses, please contact our Band Program Convenor or the School Principal. Full confidentiality assured.
BAND COMMITTEE AND PARENT VOLUNTEERS
The administration and coordination of the band program would not be possible without parent involvement. No musical experience is necessary to get involved! Opportunities to help include supervision at band rehearsals or band camps/intensives, coordinating instrument hire, coordinating a band group, or coordinating band camp/intensive days.
In addition, the band committee meets each term to discuss current issues and the direction of the band program. All RPS parents and carers are invited to join.
